The simplicity of lighting a candle is obvious, however, we suggest the following guidelines to maximize the enjoyment of your purchase.
-
To maintain the beauty and longevity of your candle, keep it out of sunlight (which can cause fading) and excessive heat (which can cause deformation).
-
Always, and this means, always, trim the wick to a ¼ inch before each and every use. This will prevent excessive smoke or soot and allow for better fragrance release. Tea lights and container candles should also be trimmed to prevent excessive heat from forming.
-
When burning your candle, we recommend that you allow approximately 1 hour for each inch of the candle diameter. This means a 1 inch votive should burn for approximately one hour and a 3 inch pillar candle should be allowed to burn for 3 hours or until melt pool is close to the edge of the candle and then be extinguished. This allows for less wax to accumulate on the edge of the candle resulting in a more even burn, no over spilling, and less wastage of unused fragrant wax.
-
Always place candle on an appropriate candle plate or holder and make sure it is level and its location is free from any drafts. If the flame is not burning upright, or the melt pool becomes uneven and closer to one side or the other, the candle is either in a draft or the surface of the candle may not be level. If this happens and the candle cannot be relocated to a more suitable draft free area, then turning the candle plate or holder every 30 minutes will help keep the melt pool from spilling over the side of the candle.
-
When extinguishing your candle, use a metal implement or wick dipper to avoid any smoke. With the use of one of these implements, dip the wick in the wax pool and immediately re-center it upright. This not only eliminates smoke but also recoats the wick so re-lighting is easier.
-
When the candle has been burned and very little remains, you may break up the leftover wax (discarding any label or wick remains) and place in a melter for further enjoyment.
-
When using leftover wax or melts in tea light melters, be aware that many tea lights can burn up to 5 hours, we recommend extinguishing the tea light flame 2 to 3 hours after lighting to avoid overheating of the wax and smoking of the tea lights. After wax solidifies, gently pry side of wax to remove it from the melter. Failing this, when the melter has cooled to room temperature, put melter in freezer for a few hours and the wax should loosen. Allow the melter to return to room temperature again before reusing.
Finally, safety of burning candles will be aided by understanding the manufacturer’s recommendations which are usually included on a warning label, located on the bottom of most candle products. This should be read as general rules do apply but each manufacturer may have specific instructions for their product.
We at CandleDeLightStore hope you enjoy your candle and appreciate your business.
